RAC7 is now officially the first gaming studio acquired by Apple. The small two-person Canadian video game company located in Vancouver is behind the development of the Sneaky Sasquatch.

The news of the acquisition first appeared on Digital Trends and was confirmed by an Apple spokesperson. RAC7 has other games in its library, including Dark Echo, released in 2015, and Splitter Critters in 2018.

“We love Sneaky Sasquatch and are excited that the 2-person RAC7 team has joined Apple to continue their work on it with us,” read the message sent by the Apple spokesperson to Digital Trends.

“We will continue to deliver a great experience for Apple Arcade players with hundreds of games from many of the best game developers in the world.”

The report claims that the purchase of RAC7 was done to “help the team grow its game more on Apple Arcade”. However, the smartphone giant confirmed that it will continue to work with third-party studios to develop more games for its platform, noting that the acquisition was made under a unique circumstance,” and not necessarily the start of a new gaming strategy.

Jason Ennis and Jesse Ringrose founded RAC7 in 2014. Even after successful releases, there are no indications that the founders want to expand the studio. Perhaps, the new acquisition will empower them to do so and dream bigger in the size of their game output.

Sneaky Sasquatch was the platform’s top game in the United States by the end of 2020, and number 5 in Canada. It won the Apple Arcade Game of the Year in the same year. The bulk of the game’s success came from its labelling by reviewers as child-friendly. Consequently, it saw a surge in children spending time on it during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
