IO Interactive, the publisher behind Build a Rocket Boy’s Mindseye, massively promoted the game, including organizing a proprietary showcase for it and two other titles. However, the buggy launch of the game held it from reaching its full potential.

Build A Rocket Boy Has Reportedly Activated Mass Layoff Proceedings After Disastrous Mindseye Launch

A recent IGN report quoted sources who said, on the condition of anonymity, the studio could dump up to 100 employees. The Edinburgh, Scotland-based studio has started a 45-day consultation process with staff beginning June 23, in line with local labor laws.

According to the UK government website, employers that want to lay off 100 or more employees are legally mandated to conduct a collective consultation period lasting at least 45 days before the redundancies. Where 20 to 99 employees are affected, the consultation period is 30 days. These rules do not apply if 19 or lower number of employees are affected.

While the exact number of roles that could be made redundant at Build a Rocket Boy is not yet known, it is safe to say that they are at least 100 since the length of the consultation period quoted by the unnamed sources is 45 days.

It is estimated that Build a Rocket Boy has around 300 UK-based employees, with approximately 200 based overseas. According to their LinkedIn page, the studio has 448 associated accounts with the company size indicated as 201 – 500.

Since the launch of Mindseye on June 10, Build a Rocket Boy has continued to work around the clock to deal with the mountain of problems that plagued the game. The situation became so severe that PlayStation began refunding multiple players, a rare occurrence last seen during the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which was eventually pulled from sale.

The studio has released two hotfixes to address some of the bugs. The June 18 hot fix #2 had a massive size of 5.4 GB on PC, 5.16 GB on PS5, and 3.9 GB on Xbox Series X|S. There are dozens of videos on YouTube that highlight the numerous flaws in the game.

Mindseye is already the worst-rated game on Metacritic this year, having an average score of 38 on PC and 28 on PS5. Its score is significantly lower than any game rated on Metacritic last year, too.
