Last week, Netflix shut down Boss Fight, the studio behind the creation of Squid Game: Unleashed. However, the extent of the impact of that decision continues to unfold through the social media posts of impacted developers.

Squid Game Unleashed

Co-founder of Boss Fight and studio director at Netflix, David Rippy, was one of the first to post about the sudden closure. “Hi everyone – well, word has gotten around quickly about Boss Fight’s closure,” Rippy wrote on LinkedIn. “Thanks, everyone who reached out today.”

“Rough news, for sure, but I’m very grateful for the time we had at Netflix. We worked with some awesome people and made many games that I’m very proud of, including Squid Game Unleased which hit #1 in 26 countries.”

Rippy said he will take some time off before considering what’s next. However, he called on those who may have open roles to consider Boss Fighters. Several other developers impacted by the decision have posted about their experience on LinkedIn.

Dungeon Boss Respawned

Boss Fight was founded in 2013, with its headquarters in Allen, Texas. The team has produced critically acclaimed titles across all platforms, including Age of Empires, Halo Wars, and Rise of Nations. They were also behind free-to-play hits like CastleVille and FrontierVille. The studio was acquired by Netflix in 2022. Their latest release under their new owner was Squid Game Unleashed.

Several employees impacted by the studio’s closure have either posted about their experience or solicited their social connections to assist them with finding a new role.

Senior illustrator Brandon Kallmes wrote, “Whelp, it was a good run while it lasted… Yesterday, we received the unfortunate news that Netflix’s internal game studio, Boss Fight Entertainment, is being shuttered”.

“Over the past few years, we launched several titles for Netflix Games, including Dungeon Boss: Respawned, Netflix Stories, and Squid Game: Unleashed. I’m incredibly proud of the work our team accomplished and so grateful for the time I spent with such talented and passionate people at Boss Fight.”

Game director David Luehmann, who spent the last decade with the company, also shared his experience. “After 10+ great years working at Boss Fight, the last few as part of Netflix, the time has come for the studio to close down.”

Through his post, we learned that Boss Fight was working on an undisclosed title before its shuttering. “I am very proud of all the people, work, and games we’ve released. I wish you could see what we had cooking!” Luemann wrote.

“Unfortunately my time at Netflix/Bossfight has come to an end,” wrote Hannah Rippy. “I am so grateful for all of the wonderful connections that I made during my time with Bossfight Entertainment and Netflix.”

Netflix has invested millions of dollars in its gaming division. However, it has yet to turn in the profit that the company hoped. Last October, the streaming giant shut down its triple-A development studio, Team Blue.
