Diablo 4 Review: The Wait Is Over? But Wait…

Diablo 4

Fans of the Diablo franchise are already counting down to the scheduled June 6 release date for Diablo 4. However, things have gotten a little complex because there are two release dates. Players with the Ultimate Edition and Digital Deluxe Editions can start playing as early as June 2. Every other person will have to wait until June 6. So, while the wait is over for some, it will stretch a little longer for others.

However, unlike some games that are released one region after another, Diablo 4 will be released at the same time across the globe. So, regardless of which part of the continent you stay, you won’t have to sulk while waiting for your turn.

Diablo 4 developers say servers are ready

One of the major setbacks that Diablo 3 suffered more than any other was server issues and queue times. This is one of the challenges of online games. Hopefully, Diablo 4 will not experience a repeat. To download Diablo 4 on console and PC fans need to visit the game’s listing on the respective online store.

Earlier in May, Blizzard Entertainment organized a massive Server Slam open beta. It was a sort of stress test for Blizzard’s servers ahead of the launch of Diablo 4. Rod Fergusson, the general manager of Diablo 4 said the stress testing paid off for the team behind the scene at Blizzard.

“We learned a lot from each of them,” Fergusson revealed to GamesRadar+ in an interview. “We’re feeling better, like we feel good about that—about all the stuff we have learned.

Aside from all the excitement and lessons, Fergusson mentioned that it was difficult for the team to fully simulate players trying to connect to a game through a playtest. In other words, things can still go wrong. According to Fergusson, if a million people showed up at an amusement park at once it would be hard to accommodate all of them irrespective of the size of the amusement park.

“We have done the work we could do to make launch day as smooth as possible,” Fergusson said. “We feel good about where we are. It might be a little bumpy on the first day, but our hopes are that, as we did on those weekends, we learn and adapt.”

Without a doubt, the developers at Blizzard will be preparing for the worst outcome with their servers on launch day. Perhaps, that explains the segmentation of the launch dates to further test with a smaller group and adapt for the bigger one.

Diablo 4 will be available on PC, PS4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

Diablo 4 review: the good, the bad, and the ugly

The horrifying intro of the game is going to make the fainthearted nervous and rethink if they should be playing the game. That is just how well the horrors were served. This horror resonates as screams and Halloween costumes throughout most parts of the game. Diablo 4 looks and sounds ominous.

For the most part, Diablo 4 was well done. The story ties back to Diablo’s first two outings. However, Diablo 4 is a clear standout in the way the world was well-built. Players will feel the tension and history instead of just a collection of maps stringed together.

From the early stages of the game, players will get to enjoy combat and character customizations that are often locked away in some other games. However, this was also the undoing of the game as it appears developers were unable to find the balance.

As soon as you accrue a decent amount of spells and armor, the game starts feeling less competitive as hordes of creatures fall before you. Blizzard has also revealed that a real-money item shop will be included in the game on launch. However, they did not give a hint on how much things may cost.

Blizzard’s monetization strategy has often been accused of being too aggressive and exploitative. It was evident in Diablo Immortal. For those looking for a long-haul game that will keep them engaged for weeks, Diablo 4 will be a good place to invest that time. For everyone else, the game will struggle to imprint.
