Since the announcement of the formation of Eighth Lantern Studios by ex-Zenimax Online Studios devs, a lot of gamers have been asking questions. Two of the most frequently asked questions are “What are you making?” and “What does Eighth Lantern mean?”.
While the studio has said it will talk about what game it is working on in a future update, it has now shed more light on the meaning of the name—and it makes a lot of sense and further raises our expectations on what they are cooking.

“The name ‘Eighth Lantern’ represents a journey beyond the familiar,” the studio explained via their LinkedIn page. “The number seven is found throughout the natural and cultural world – seven continents, seven colors in the rainbow, and seven notes in the musical scale – symbolizing the ‘known world.’ The number eight, therefore, stands for what lies beyond: new possibilities, and unexplored horizons.”

Since the July 2025 mass layoff by Microsoft, several employees impacted by the layoffs have banded together to form studios. Two previous studios that have emerged from that layoff are Sackbird Studios and Ironroot Games.
