In terms of the scope of the impact of the DDoS attack, Square Enix revealed that players may experience issues ranging from being disconnected from the JP/NA/EU/OC data center Worlds, difficulty logging in, and difficulty accessing, sending, and receiving data from the data centers.

Interestingly, between May 2 and 3, Square Enix’s account management system also experienced login issues with players experiencing issues with some features when using Firefox. That issue was resolved on May 3 and the company apologized for the inconvenience it may have caused.

The company linked the issue to the “Google reCAPTCHA used for authentication”. We can not verify if the current DDoS attack is linked to the May 2 event, or if they are separate occurrences.

Another detail that was not revealed at the time of writing is the identity of the attacker. Final Fantasy 14 held an Open Beta for Xbox earlier in February this year. The next major expansion for the game is Dawntrail which has been scheduled for release on July 2, 2024.
