Multiple sources have reported that GTA 5 source code has leaked online, alongside fresh Python code from GTA 6. Also shared online are files from Bully 2 which never got to see the light of day. GTA Focal claimed the publicly shared GTA 5 “source code was previously traded between individuals”.

A snippet of the source code was first shared during the late 2022 GTA 6 leak—believed to be orchestrated by members of the lapsus$ group. The teenager behind that hack has now been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order and would only be released at a time when a board certifies that he is no longer a threat to society.

However, this is the first time that the full source code of the 2013 release was shared. What could not be ascertained was the age of the content of the new source code leak. Screenshots of the source code were shared online.

“So it seems the entire source code for GTA 5 has leaked online in a Discord Server,” wrote Joe who runs a handle on X dedicated to GTA news and rumors. “There is also a Bully 2 file, early GTA 5 map & script which confirms GTA 6 was codenamed “Project Americas”.

I found it interesting that we are still talking about GTA 5 a decade after it was released, when Rockstar has moved on to GTA 6. The trailer 1 of GTA 6 was released earlier this month. In just 24 hours it smashed the record set by the Trailer 1 of GTA 5.

Bully 2 and Agent details were shared alongside the GTA 5 source code

In 2006, Rockstar developed and published Bully. The game eventually received a PS4 re-release. The third-person action-adventure enjoyed a positive reception, raking in an average score of 87 on PS2 on Metacritic.

It was a fresh open-world experience at that time that allowed players to navigate their environment on foot, go-kart, bicycle, motor scooter, or skateboard. It followed the story of James “Jimmy” Hopkins, a juvenile delinquent who was enrolled at Bullworth Academy boarding school against his wish.

During his one year at the school, Hopkins put in effort to rise through the ranks of the school system to stop bullying—albeit he faced a lot of resistance. A remastered version of the game called Scholarship Edition which Mad Doc Software developed for Xbox 360 and Wii had two-player competitive multiplayer mode.

Considering the positive reception of the game, fans anticipated a sequel. Sadly, that never happened. However, in addition to the GTA 5 source code leak, there was a leak that suggested Bully 2 nearly happened. Files relating to Bully 2 were reportedly shared too. The screenshot of the alleged Bully 2 files had at least 79 files believed to be linked to the game.

The new leak also includes fresh Python code from GTA 6 as well as a few early conceptual materials from GTA 5—like the game’s original map rendition. With GTA 5 source code now made public, the biggest concern is that modders can now make sophisticated cheats with ease.

Rockstar trashed 8 GTA 5 expansions

As eagle-eyed data scrapers continue to devour the details of the leaks, more shocking details have emerged on the decisions that Rockstar made about GTA 5. Unlike many big hitters, GTA 5 never got a DLC. The reason was partly because Rockstar shifted their attention to GTA Online which became highly successful and made the company huge cash returns.

“No, it was not really a conscious decision, it’s just what happened,” Rockstar design director Imran Sarwar told Game Informer in a 2017 interview. “With GTA 5, the single-player game was absolutely massive and very very complete. It was three games in one.”

“The next-gen versions took a year of everyone’s time to get right, then the online component had a lot of potential but to come close to realizing that potential, also sucked up a lot of resources. There are other games—in particular Red Dead Redemption 2. The combination of these three factors means for this game, we did not feel single-player expansion was either possible or necessary.”

Through the leaked GTA 5 source code, some of the proposed DLCs for that never got to see the light of day were uncovered. The proposed titles for the DLCs uncovered through the source code are as follows:

  • ‘SP Assassination Pack’
  • ‘SP Manhunt Pack’
  • ‘SP Norman Pack’
  • ‘Agent Trevor’
  • ‘Relationship Pack’
  • ‘Enterprise Pack’
  • ‘Prologue DLC’
  • ‘LibertyV DLC’

The revelation has sparked a discussion on how Rockstar ditched the single-player experience for live service games. Some even insinuated the flurry of single-player cancellations may have inspired the mass exodus of talents from the company.

“With so many GTA V DLCs Story canceled, Bully 2 and The Agent Game which had a full map concept too, I can see why some of the original founders and long-time writers left Rockstar Games,” wrote NikTek who touts himself as the biggest PC meme maker. “All of their energy and time went onto GTA: Online. I would not be surprised if Red Dead Redemption 2 got this same treatment as GTA V, that’s why they left.”
