About 90 videos and pictures of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) was leaked online by hackers. This includes an alleged GTA 6 trailer. Rockstar Games confirmed the leak that is considered one of the biggest confidential data breaches in the history of the gaming industry.

Fans have long awaited the release of the GTA 6 trailer to give them a glimpse into the follow-up of GTA V. Rockstar said the hack was “extremely disappointing”. It is not surprising that Rockstar has become the target of hackers.

The last GTA game grossed $800 million in 24 hours and went ahead to rake in $1 billion in the first three days after it was released, making it the fastest-selling entertainment product in history.

GTA 6 trailer leak continues a string of leaks from the upcoming game

The leak of the GTA 6 trailer is not the first time that the franchise has been hacked since the announcement of development. In September 2022, a similar hack leaked source code and development footage. Now, YouTuber, SanInPlay, claims to have seen GTA 6 trailer and shared details online.

Message from Rockstar Games after GTA 6 September 2022 leak

SanInPlay was credited as one of the first to share rumors of a female protagonist, Lucia, in GTA 6. He shared a cryptic message on Twitter that seems to describe the events in the GTA 6 trailer.

“Plane passes, a lizard crosses the street, Lucia is in prison exercising, dogs are playing, a little doggy rolls on the beach,” SanInPlay wrote.

The YouTuber also claims that GTA 6 graphics will be better than Unreal Engine 5. He shared a video on YouTube on April 5 where he showed off a female character walking through a street with cars parked on both sides.

Last month another leak that was shared on Reddit revealed the game’s map. The leak also showed that the game would be set in modern-day Miami, Vice City, the same setting as the 2002 title. The leaked GTA 6 trailer has already been taken down.

GTA 6 will only be available on PC and next-gen consoles

Gradually, developers are sidestepping older consoles and only releasing games for next-gen consoles. GTA 6 is expected to follow that trend. Owners of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 may need to upgrade to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S to play the game.

The last GTA game did not perform well on older consoles which may explain why Rockstar wants to do away with it entirely. Since the release of GTA V in 2013, the game industry has evolved tremendously. Also, Rockstar strives to set the pace in open-world gaming.

Therefore, the upcoming GTA 6 is likely to have enhanced graphics, world, and gameplay mechanics—just as suggested by some of the leaks. All these require larger hardware and may be harder for older-gen consoles to handle efficiently. That means Rockstar will need to work harder to make the game compatible with older consoles.

GTA 6 leaks

Tom Henderson, a contributor at Insider Gaming noted that GTA 6 will likely be released in 2024. However, there is also the possibility that the game will be pushed back to 2025. Every hack into Rockstar’s server increases the chance of a release date delay.

Henderson is also of the opinion that the latest generation of consoles is yet to hit player numbers comparable to their older counterparts—although released in 2020.

According to Henderson, Rockstar may deliberately delay GTA 6 release until the holidays of 2025 to allow the new generation consoles to build more player numbers. This will allow the game to have a larger audience on launch.
