Microsoft’s July 2025 layoffs saw several hundred employees leave Zenimax Online and the cancellation of an unannounced MMO project called Blackbird. Some former employees formed Sackbird Studios in October. Another team of former Zenimax Online employees has formed a new studio called Ironroot Games.
Ironroot Games is described as “an independent studio forged by passionate developers focused on crafting deeply engaging experiences”. The studio also said their “work centers on memorable characters, purposeful gameplay, and worlds full of wonder”.
Ironroot Games has its headquarters in San Diego, California. Those who wish to collaborate with them can do so through their website or send them a message through [email protected].
“We are Ironroot Games, a brand new independent game studio created by friends that want to make incredible games,” the new studio announced on LinkedIn.
“We’re rooted in community values and the belief in succeeding together. Our team has come together to tell stories rooted in years of combined industry experience. Our first project is in development.”
Ironroot Games was co-founded by Quentin Cobb, who also serves as the studio’s creative director. Cobb spent 4 years at ZeniMax Online Studios, rising from senior game designer to principal gameplay designer. He also spent over 7 years at Naughty Dog, which he left in 2017.
Other Ironroot Games employees include Tim Mrozek (content director), Elaine Gomez (principal gameplay designer and studio culture lead), Brad Fawaz (game director), and Sarah Lynn (executive producer).
Following the unveiling, Sackbird Studios has sent a congratulatory message to Ironroot Games, saying, “We’ve had the privilege of working alongside many of them during our time at ZOS, and seeing them start this new chapter is genuinely exciting. We can’t wait to see what you create. We’re rooting for you!”
