Efforts by paramedics to revive the actor were abortive, and the actor was declared dead at home. The suspect was identified as a 59-year-old Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez. The actor’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, shared a disturbing statement the following day, alleging that Jonathan Joss was targeted for his sexuality.

Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, the suspected shooter
Joss was approached by the suspect on June 1, 2025, who yelled homophobic slurs before the shooting. The dispute between the two neighbors dates back a long way, and police have been called in on several occasions.
According to Gonzales, Joss was killed when he stopped by his family’s old house, which was burned down in January, to pick up some mail. Gonzales claimed that they had faced years of threats and harassment from people who “did not accept our relationship”.
“He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other,” Gonzales claimed.
When the San Antonio Police Department was asked if there were signs that the attack was homophobically motivated, they said, “We cannot confirm anything along those lines as this is an ongoing investigation”.
“SAPD investigators handle these allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, the suspect will be charged accordingly,” the police said through a social media post.
