Each successive year for the past three years, Steam has seen a record number of concurrent players and game uploads. However, it may fascinate you to know that the top 100 games on Steam still see significantly fewer players than Roblox.

Roblox

Over 80 million gamers log into Roblox every day, with the number of active monthly players estimated at around 380 million. It is obvious that Roblox is no longer a medium for kids; rather, a super digital gaming platform that is shaping the industry.

One game that recently achieved a tremendous feat is Grow a Garden. It skyrocketed to the top of the Roblox charts hours after the release of its 1.07.0 update. Although it was released a few months ago, the current surge pushed the number of concurrent players to 7,769,132.

In contrast, the number of concurrent players pulled in by the top 100 games on Steam at the time Grow a Garden set the record was 7,316,443. Also, the concurrent player count hit by Grow a Garden is twice as much as the most concurrently played game on Steam to date, PUBG: Battlegrounds (3,257,248).

“Are you ready to grow your very own garden?” read the game’s blurb. “By seeds from the shop when they restock, plant them, wait for them to grow, and collect the profits! Flex fruits and finds on friends, and have fun!”

The success of Grow a Garden and Roblox has been attributed to accessibility. Just like most of the other games on Roblox, Grow a Garden is free to play and can run on virtually any device. Even more impressive is that the game is driven by a small team of creators who are actively listening to feedback and making changes in real time based on what players want.

The milestone concurrent player count is not only a win for Roblox and Grow a Garden, but for the entire gaming industry. In recent years, it appears the interest of gamers is shifting to core gameplay and fun rather than a polished and bloated triple-A experience.

Some of the highly rated games this year have been developed by a small team of developers with a lean budget. From Balatro to Bionic Bay, Blue Prince, and Clair Obscure: Expedition 33, the list of successful titles that fit into this picture is growing which should inspire other smaller teams to believe that they could capture the heart of the right audience and find success in a saturated market, if they focus on what really matter.
