GameBaba Universe

It was widely reported that Romero Games has closed (including by GameBaba Universe), citing an interview granted to The Journal by an anonymous employee. The studio has now set the records straight.

In an update shared on social media, the studio said it has become necessary “to address recent reports” because they contained “inaccuracies”. The studio reiterated that “funding for our project was pulled, and our game was canceled”.

However, due to a “confidentiality agreement”, Romero Games cannot still name the publisher or the project that was canceled. However, they said, “Some may infer it from public information”.

“As a result, we now have to reassess the entire staffing of our studio. Romero Games is not closed, and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that it does not come to that. Any suggestion otherwise is factually incorrect. Indeed, we were in the studio today to discuss next steps with the team.”

The management of Romero Games mentioned that they have been contacted by several publishers who are interested in helping to get the project “across the finish line,” and that they are considering the opportunities. See the full statement from the studio below.

Romero Games Updated statement

Romero Games has remained one of the leading studios in employee benefits. Last year, while celebrating their 10-year milestone, the studio announced that it would start giving menopause leave and clothing allowance to employees. The studio added new employee benefits almost every year.

At a time when the industry is filled with studios that would cut roles to boost profits or easily axe employees and replace them with AI, an employer like Romero Games, which consistently demonstrates care towards its employees, should not be allowed to fail. GameBaba Universe will be following this development closely.
