Shift Up has acquired Unbound, a studio led by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil. The studio is best known for developing Stellar Blade. The acquisition is expected to strengthen its global PC and console publishing capabilities.

“SHIFT UP (CEO Hyung-Tae Kim) announced that it has completed the acquisition of Japanese game developer UNBOUND Inc. by acquiring all of its shares,” read the latest press release on the company’s website.

Before founding Unbound, Mikami had worked on lots of global hit titles, including Devil May Cry, The Evil Within, and Okami. Unbound is currently working on a new IP targeting the global market. Shift Up plans to directly handle the publishing of the new studio’s upcoming titles.

Reacting to the acquisition, Shift Up CEO Hyung-Tae Kim said, “I find it deeply meaningful to join forces with UNBOUND, which brings together a world-class development team led by CEO Shinji Mikami”

“This acquisition will serve as an opportunity to deliver the best gaming experience to users worldwide and further solidify SHIFT UP’s global development competitiveness.”

Shift Up released a video that delves deeper into the collaboration. The video features mostly Mikami talking about his philosophy for game development and the vision for the collaboration. You can watch the video below.

Unbound CEO Mikami was also excited about the partnership and said, “I am very pleased to be partnering with SHIFT UP CEO Hyung-Tae Kim and all the employees.”
