If you are thinking about what’s next for Need For Speed, you might as well taper your expectations. The game has been shelved, according to a photojournalist and longtime contributor of Speedhunters, Matthew Everingham. The decision has also put Speedhunters on ice.

“Speedhunters is on ice. EA shelved Need For Speed, and that means no more funding for the site,” Everingham shared on Instagram. “Grateful for everything — the trips, the stories, the lifelong mates. I’m still shooting, just shifting gears into more video.

Speedhunters is an international collective of drivers, writers, and photographers with a shared passion for uncovering the world’s most exciting car culture stories. The site has been around for around 17 years.

Speedhunters’ X account has not been updated since July 15, 2022. The last activity recorded on the account was the changing of the profile picture and banners to a blank black image. The last post on their website was on April 4, 2025.

Earlier this year, EA released a statement that suggested plans for a new Need for Speed game were on hold as the current developer, Criterion, had been moved to focus on the next Battlefield game.

In September 2023, when EA announced the shifting of Criterion divisions to Battlefield development, they said the core group would continue working on the next Need for Speed.

Need for Speed was previously developed by Ghost Games before it was renamed to EA Gothenburg and restructured into a support studio. Ghost Games was in charge of Need for Speed Payback and Need for Speed Heat development, released in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

The baton shifted to Criterion, which developed the latest entry in the series, Need for Speed Unbound, which was released in 2022. There has been an outpouring of support in the comment section of Everingham’s post.
