The latest financial results from Nintendo are in and confirm that Switch 2 is the company’s fastest-selling console ever. The Japanese gaming giant confirmed that it has now sold 17.37 million units of Switch 2. For context, the Switch 2 has been on sale for just 7 months.

The numbers show that the Switch 2 has sold nearly 10 million units more than its predecessor within the same time frame. It has also sold 7 million more than the PS5 and PS4. These numbers confirm its status as the fastest-selling console launch.

In the three months ended December 31, 2025, Switch 2 sold-in roughly 7.01 million units. Those numbers were slightly lower than the 7.2 million units sold by Switch 1 in its first holiday sales period. The decline was blamed on softer sales in some Western markets.

Switch 2 (million

Japan 1.77 2.43
United States 2.82 2.3
The rest of the world 2.64 2.27

Higher prices and tariffs have been fingered for the better performance of Switch 1’s first holiday sales compared to Switch 2. The former was way more affordable compared to the latter. Also, Switch 1 already had 3D Mario games and the original Legend of Zelda on the market.

Nintendo Switch 2 is set to shatter more records

The Nintendo Switch 2 has already outsold the lifetime performance of the Wii U (13.56 million) and is well on its way to beat the lifetime numbers of the GameCube (21.74 million). By the end of the current fiscal year ending March 31, the Japanese gaming giant expects Switch 2 to sell-in 19 million units.

At 17.37 million already, it will likely surpass the 19 million target. If that happens, it will be a significant milestone considering the fact that it took the original Switch two years to ship 20 million units in a single fiscal year.

“Despite some investors having spread FUD over the last few weeks, it turns out people are still buying the Switch 2,” Dr Serkan Toto, the CEO of Kantan Games, a Japanese games industry consultancy, told VGC.

“If Nintendo supplied Japan with enough devices throughout 2025, they could most probably have come close to 20 million units sold. What is amusing is that the company kept its forecast of 19 million units sold for the fiscal year intact, despite the number being at 17.37 million already. This continues Nintendo’s long stretch of lowballing estimates.”

The Switch 2 has a fairly strong lineup for the future, including Mario Tennis Fever due in February and Pokémon Pokopia launch in March. Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch 2 edition will also arrive in March, followed by Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in Spring.

Historical hardware sell-ins

During the three months ended December 31, 2025, Nintendo sold an additional 1.36 million units of the original Switch console, which brings its total lifetime sales to 155.37 million units. That number confirms that the original Switch is now Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, displacing Nintendo DS, which previously held the record with 154.02 million units sold.
