The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has grossed $372.5 million from 80 markets across the globe. The much-anticipated sequel launched on April 1, 2026. The first movie grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide, and the sequel is believed to be on track to match that record.

The 3-day domestic earnings for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie were $130.9 million. The 5-day domestic earnings jumped to $190 million. However, the global earnings as of last weekend stood at $372.5 million.

For Illumination, the studio behind the movie’s production, in collaboration with Nintendo, these numbers mean more than mere digits. For example, it is the studio’s second biggest 3-day opening, behind The Super Mario Bros. Most importantly, it is the biggest debut that any movie has recorded to date in 2026.

In recent years, PG-rated movies have outperformed other ratings at the box office. In 2024 and 2025, PG-rated movies dominated the box office. Also falling into that category, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is perfectly positioned to surpass its predecessor at the box office.

According to a Deadline report, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie attracted around 62% of non-frequent moviegoers to the theater. Since the end of the pandemic, the movie industry has witnessed a shrinking of the non-frequent moviegoers.

“This extraordinary weekend underscores the amazing partnership between Illumination and Nintendo, and the enduring strength of Mario and his pals,” said Domestic Distribution Boss Jim Orr.

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie feels bigger and more ambitious, with audiences clearly embracing this next evolution of their world.  Also exciting to note that this is Chris Meledandri’s 16th movie in 16 years, a period of extraordinary success that continues again this summer with another event title.”

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned a Generally Unfavorable score of 36 on Metacritic and 42% on Tomatometer. However, the audience disagreed widely with reviewers, giving it 7.8 on Metacritic and 89% on Popcornmeter.
