God of War: Sons of Sparta was shadow-dropped in the last PlayStation State of Play. Santa Monica Studio and Mega Cat Studios have been raving about the 2D Metroidvania entry in the series. However, it appears the enthusiasm didn’t trickle down to players.

The latest entry managed a mixed or average rating of 68 on Metacritic from 26 critic reviews. The User Score was also mixed or average. The majority of the reviews have been harsh. PlayStation Universe scored the game 75, saying, “Though the tonal shift might be too much for some longer term God of War vets and it really doesn’t achieve anything fresh or new in the Metroidvania space”.

Metro GameCentral was more critical in their review, calling it, “A very run of the mill Metroidvania that does little of interest with the God of War setting and stumbles in terms of the dull combat and unengaging plot”.
In the history of the franchise, the 2018 God of War and God of War: Ragnarök have earned the highest rating with a Metascore of 94. All three entries from the Greek Trilogy also scored above 90. The PSP entries, Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus, had better ratings compared to the latest release.

Before the release of God of War: Sons of Sparta, the entry that held the record as the worst-rated God of War game was God of War: Ascension with a score of 80. As more reviews are published in the coming days and weeks, the rating may slide further on the chart.
At the time Insider Gaming published its report, the rating was 69. However, at the time GameBaba Universe checked, it had dropped to 68. During the State of Play, it was also announced that the original God of War trilogy was getting a remake that will bring back T. C. Carson as the voice of Kratos.
