MachineGames studio director Jerk Gustafsson recently shared exclusive information with GamesIndustry.biz. Since 2014, the studio has been developing Wolfenstein games. The second installment was released in 2017, and fans have been yearning for a third.

For starters, Wolfenstein is a first-person POV game set in history, 1960s Europe, precisely. The story revolves around a war veteran, William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, who is working tirelessly to stop the Nazis from ruling the world.

MachineGames has just opened a new office in Sundsvall, around three and a half hours north of the headquarters in Uppsala, Sweden. During the interview, Gustafsson admitted that age was no longer on his side.
“There’s so many things that I would like to do, but I’m also getting a bit older, so I don’t have that many games left in me,” he said. “It takes a long time to make a game now, and let’s say that we release one every four years, then maybe two more, maybe three if I’m lucky.”
When asked if one of those games left in him will be Wolfenstein 3, he said, “Our intention has always been to go back to Wolfenstein. We wanted to finish the trilogy. And when we do that, that is something that I don’t want to comment on. It can be now, it can be later, but we’re not done with it. That’s what I can say.”
The future of MachineGames appears to be in doubt

Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot, both released in 2019, were the last entries in the franchise. However, MachineGames has been busy with other projects since then, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
Gustafsson expressed concern about the future of the studio, aligning with the feeling that MachineGames is probably the last of a dying breed.
“I still hope that there will continue to be a market for the type of games we do, because obviously we love to do them,” Gustafsson said. “And to be honest, I also see less of them, especially when it comes to what we call AAA.”
