As developers and publishers continue to look towards AI for more efficient game development, Sony appears to have landed a major win with the acquisition of Cinemersive Labs. The PlayStation maker announced the acquisition on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

“Today, we are pleased to announce that SIE has entered into an agreement to acquire Cinemersive Labs, a UK-based machine learning and computer vision company,” read the announcement posted on the Sony Interactive Entertainment blog.

“Following the acquisition, the Cinemersive Labs team will join SIE’s Visual Computing Group (VCG) and contribute to our broader efforts in advancing state of the art visual computing within games. This includes applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and unlock new levels of visual fidelity for players.”

Cinemersive Labs was founded in 2022. The studio recently launched Parallax, a VR app that transforms a single photo shot into a volumetric 3D immersive experience.

“Parallax photos have several distinctive properties,” Cinemersive Labs explained at that time. “First, they are three-dimensional (aka “six-degrees-of-freedom”) providing correct parallax in response to head motion in VR. This is in contrast to more traditional stereo-photographs (including “spatial photos”) that contain two fixed viewpoints for the two eyes, and therefore do not handle parallax correctly.”

“Parallax photos are taken with a single shot capturing a particular moment in time. This is in contrast to photogrammetric reconstruction that provides stunning (and more complete) scene models by processing images taken subsequently from multiple viewpoints.”

Sony’s first-party titles have always emphasized realism. The company hopes this acquisition will help it push the boundaries of visual computing further and deliver richer, more immersive gameplay experiences.

This adds to the other major acquisitions that have happened this year, including the acquisition of Unbound Studio by Shift Up and the acquisition of Moonton by Savvy Games.
