The last time that an EA game got over 90 Metascore was around 13 years ago when Mass Effect 3 was released in 2012. Split Fiction has succeeded in breaking that deadlock with an impressive Metacritic score of 92 on Xbox Series X and PC and 91 on PS5, which also makes it one of the highest-rated games released this year to date.
Split Fiction is the latest entry from Hazelight Studios popular for making stunning co-op games including It Takes Two and A Way Out. However, that is not the only record set by Split Fiction.

The game which launched on March 6, 2025, debuted with a peak of over 197,000 concurrent players on Steam. Considered the spiritual successor to It Takes Two released by the studio in 2021, Split Fiction is a co-op adventure that can be played by two players remotely or online.
The new release from the Swedish studio headed by Josef Fares has joined its predecessors on the critical acclaim list. However, out of the other games previously released by the studio, Split Fiction has outpaced the rest in commercial performance and player perception.
In fact, Split Fiction shows how Hazelight has continued to grow over the years and improve with every new release. In comparison, It Takes Two, which went on to win the Game of the Year, attracted 71,039 concurrent players as of December 2024.
In an interview last week, Fares said that Hazelight games will never include microtransactions and teased that the studio’s next project may be a single-player game. However, it is still too early to talk about their next project.
For now, we believe the studio’s focus will be on celebrating its successful launch and fixing any bugs that players may spot in the game. Moreover, Hazelight deserves their flowers because they earned them.
