Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is roughly two weeks away from release and Rocksteady has been doing a lot to build hype around the game before the February 2, 2024, release date. A few days ago, they partially lifted its Alpha Test NDA, allowing participants to openly discuss their experiences. In a recent interview, product director Darius Sadeghian said the game is Rocksteady Studio’s biggest story-focused adventure yet.

“It’s still full of the DNA that infuses the Batman: Arkham series—those foundations of story and character are absolutely central to our process,” Sadeghian told Play Magazine in Issue 36. “Story-wise, this is easily our biggest game.”

After making the Batman Arkham trilogy, which many consider one of the greatest trilogies in history, Rocksteady took a brave move with the assembling of anti-heroes in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn, and King Shark were recruited by special agent Amanda Waller to take down members of the Justice League who have now become agents of destruction under Brainiac’s mind control.

While the pre-launch reviews of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League have been mixed, Rocksteady remains optimistic that players will love the story-driven anti-hero adventure and promised to support the game with huge post-launch releases.

Some of the planned post-launch content includes new story missions, gears, locations, collectibles trinkets, costumes, and playable members of the Suicide Squad—“each will have their own unique mechanics and they’ll be unlockable for all players for free”. Members of Rocksteady are most excited about the level of customization that can be done in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Rocksteady was making a multiplayer game before Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Some of the fans criticizing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League have cited the live service influence that has stuck with the game. This remains evident as multiple currencies and shooter stats. However, Sadeghian said the team at Rocksteady is “keen on being there for players who want to stay with us and continue the adventure”.

“It’s really important to us that we’re generous with the people who play our game, so far the first year after launch we’ve got masses of new content that will be completely free for people who own the game.”

What many may not have known was that before Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady was developing an original multiplayer game. The news was shared by Bloomberg and cited sources familiar with the UK studio’s strategy in the past decade.

The report claimed that after Batman Arkham Knight was released in 2015, Rocksteady started working on Batman: Arkham VR and another unnamed multiplayer game based on an original franchise. It was also reported that Warner Bros. Montreal, the studio behind Gotham Knights and Batman: Arkham Originals canceled a Suicide Squad game in 2016.

The property was later handed over to Rocksteady who started developing Kill the Justice League a year later. The original multiplayer game remains a mystery as no further details were revealed about the game in the report. Against popular opinion, the Bloomberg report claimed Rocksteady never pitched or worked on a game based on the Superman IP.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s path to release has been rocky. The game suffered multiple delays before getting its current February 2 release date. However, last month it was reported that the Epic Games Store PC version of the game has suffered yet another delay and will now launch on March 5.

The game was initially designed to require an online connection to play. However, Rocksteady recently confirmed they will create an offline mode post-release following backlash from fans.
