FromSoftware Drops Unexpected Update About Elden Ring DLC Shadow Of The Erdtree

Earnings reports are usually filled with numbers which many may find boring. However, those who care to take a deeper look often find treasures hidden within those numbers. For Elden Ring fans, it was cheering news about the progress of the upcoming DLC called Shadow of the Erdtree.

It’s almost the second anniversary of Elden Ring and fans of the game have been hyped about the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC which was announced almost a year ago (precisely in February). Developed by FromSoftware, the hype follows the excellent performance of the base game which eventually won the Game of the Year at the Games Award last year, beating God of War Ragnarök to it.

Players had to wait for years after the announcement to play the base game. Hopefully, they won’t have to wait for that long to get the DLC. In their usual way, FromSoftware has not released any gameplay footage about the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. This has sparked a similar anticipation as the base game.

Thankfully, fans of the game were able to glean from Kadokawa’s latest earnings, FromSoftware’s parent company, that “development is proceeding smoothly”. While there has been no significant news about the Elden Ring DLC, eagerly waiting fans were more than excited about the revelation in the earnings report.

According to a VGC report, the company said during a Q&A, “We are currently working hard on the development of DLC for Elden Ring, but we have not announced a release date at this time”.

Days after the first anniversary of Elden Ring, the game’s publisher, Bandai Namco, said 20 million copies had been sold. FromSoftware has continued to update the base game with new features. An update last December unlocked several Colossums that were previously dotted on the map when the game was first released.

It also introduced PVP battles like team fights, free-for-alls, and duels. Earlier in March this year, FromSoftware also released an update that added ray tracing support on PCs and current-gen consoles.

Elden Ring DLC may expand on the stories of overlooked demigods

Games often focus on the main character and tell the story from their perspective. This sometimes leaves players guessing the backstory of some of the other key characters. Studios often use DLCs or spinoffs to fill up those story dark spots.

One character that some fans are speculating may get a proper backstory in the upcoming Elden Ring DLC is Godwyn the Golden, the first demigod to die. Godywn the Golden is considered one of the most neglected demigods in the game.

Based on the connection between Erdtree and Godwyn, fans are speculating that the demigod will get some narrative and gameplay in the DLC. After his death at the beginning of Elden Ring, Godwyn’s body was sealed under the Erdtree.

Although there has not been a trailer or a teaser for the upcoming DLC, an image that surfaced some time ago which was claimed to be from the upcoming DLC showed the Erdtree blighted and without life. It was the ghost of its former self in the base game where the branches radiated bright lights. In the image, it was a ghostly shriveled tree surrounded by an ominous aura.

One of the narratives that seem to be gaining strong acceptance is that Godwyn may have awakened from the dead and sucked the life out of the Erdtree. Apparently, there are several necromancers in Elden Ring that are capable of pulling that off.

Regardless of the path that FromSoftware decides to drive the story, it will most likely expand on what we already know—just like every other DLCs—rather than weaving a new tale.
