Xbox suffered a major outage on Monday that affected numerous online services, including sign-in and playing any downloaded game that required check-in. Xbox quickly acknowledged the issue and said it was working on a fix.

The issue has since been resolved, although many Xbox users were locked out of some services for hours. Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet later posted a lengthy message on X explaining what happened and how the company hopes to prevent a recurrence in the future.

“Earlier today, many players began experiencing issues with sign in, enumerating their game libraries and playing games.” Vliet wrote. “The team has worked hard throughout the day to fix the issue, and we’ve restored service as of 2:30 PM PDT. Nonetheless, this is an unacceptable situation, and we must do better to support you.”

“Over the coming weeks, you’ll hear more from me about our services, our platform, and the work we’re doing to make XBOX better. And that starts with some transparency about this incident.”

The cause of the Xbox outage and the way forward

Apparently, the Xbox outage was caused by a failure of “a licensing service that sits outside of Xbox, but which Xbox depends upon”, according to the statement released by Vliet. Several publishing and store partners were affected, especially those that required entitlement checks.

When on-call teams discovered the problem through automated monitoring, they shifted traffic to the healthy part of the failing infrastructure, while working to resolve the root cause. This led to a situation where some players in some regions recovered hours before others.

According to Vliet, the biggest concerns are “why a failure in one service was able to take down this much, why recovery took as long as it did, and what we change so a single point of failure can’t ruin your night again”.

“That means hardening the dependencies underneath sign in and game launch, improving how we detect and contain this class of failure, and being faster and clearer with you when something breaks.”

Incidents like this highlight the importance of keeping physical media alive. Online infrastructures are not fail-proof, at least for now. However, many platform owners (Sony in reference) are continually pushing gamers to abandon physical media for digital media. The big question is, should gamers trust them?
