Last Week, Bungie announced that Destiny 2 will get its final update on June 9, but the servers will remain live. With the third installment not greenlit, the studio is also facing an uncertain future. Bungie is reportedly planning mass layoffs, too.

Fans of the franchise are planning to overload the servers on June 9 to send a message to the developer that the franchise is worth saving. A Redditor, w1nds0r, is calling on fans of the franchise to log in on June 9.

“We need to at least smash Marathon’s all-time high to show them they made the wrong decision,” was the charge from the Redditor.

“Heresy was amazing, the edge of fate story was interesting. They let this happen by doubling down on bad system changes and ignoring player feedback. I feel like everyone should make a decent effort to log in on June 9th to show them this is a franchise worth continuing to invest in. If you can, try to get your friend and clan mates to all log in when the last update drops, it’s our last chance to send a message the franchise is still valuable. That’s all really. Take care!”

The post has received thousands of upvotes and comments. A similar charge has also appeared on other social media platforms. However, it will take more than a social media campaign to save Destiny 2 and Bungie at this time, considering the fact that Sony is always looking for ways to cut losses.

Principal communications manager at Bungie, Dylan Gafner, popularly known as dmg04, thanked fans for the photos and Destiny 2-related content they have been sharing.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out. Thank you to everyone who’s been sharing what Destiny means to them,” Gafner wrote. “Passing these along to the team as they roll in. Photos, videos, art pieces, everything. Your stories mean the world to all of us. Thank you. If you have posts, or wish to share more, feel free to tag us on ‘em.”

Destiny 2 Season of the Worthy

For fans to get Sony’s attention, they need to hit at least 300K concurrent players on June 9. Elsewhere, fans of the franchise have succeeded in getting over 250K signatures to pressure Sony into greenlighting the third installment in the franchise.

A petition on Change.org titled “Petition Sony to develop Destiny 3” has received 269,528 signatures at the time of writing. The petition was started by Harley Casto, who claims the passion and commitment of fans to the Destiny franchise “drives us to reach out to Sony and express our collective voice”.

“We believe in the potential of Destiny 3 to inspire new generations of gamers and to keep the fire of the Guardian spirit alive.”
