Destiny 2 will get its final update on June 9. According to reports, Bungie, the studio behind the game, has no project in the pipeline after that final update, which puts the developers at risk of being made redundant.

It was also alleged that Bungie is investing more resources into Marathon, an extraction shooter it released in March. Marathon has yet to meet sales expectations since its release. However, the studio is optimistic that the player base will expand over time.

In recent months, some of the developers working on Destiny were reassigned to Marathon. In Jason Schreier’s Bloomberg report, it is alleged that Bungie is planning significant layoffs after the final update for Destiny 2. The number of people that would be impacted is still unclear.

The staff is looking to pitch new projects, including those that may be related to Destiny. However, the PlayStation studio will need to get the nod from its parent company before proceeding with any new project.

Destiny 2 was released in 2017. Bungie has continued to support the game since then with content updates and bug fixes. So, what happens after June 9, after the release of the final update? Bungie has provided clarification on the fate of Destiny 2 after the June 9 update.

“As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games,” the studio wrote in a blog post. “To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.”

“Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.”
