PlayStation State of Play June 2026 ended with the gameplay reveal of God of War: Laufey. The story spins off from God of War 2018 when Kratos was cremating his wife. The game’s director says the upcoming title helps to bridge the gap between the series’ past and present.

In the next installment in the series, Laufey navigates the afterlife, determined to return home. God of War: Laufey director, Ariel Lawrence, in an interview, hinted at what players should expect in the upcoming release.

Lawrence is credited as a writer in some of the previous God of War games before becoming a director. In the interview with GamesRadar+, Lawrence spoke about how Laufey allowed them to borrow influences from the series’ Norse and Greek eras. According to the director, the latest installment allowed Santa Monica studio to tinker with the original trilogy’s more mobile and aerial combat.
“I mean, I definitely cut my teeth on the first God of War,” Lawrence said, adding that chaining combos and juggling enemies “was always something that I love doing”.
Lawrence hinted at the difficult question the studio had to answer before when they were searching for the perfect protagonist that will fuse the series reboot’s stylish roots and newer, grounded tone.

“What does it look like for those things to come together, and who can do that the best for us? And, you know, offer that agility, that flexibility, but still, you know, stand toe to toe with who we need to?”
The studio found the answers to these questions in Laufey. The game doesn’t have a release window or date yet. However, if Sony continues the tradition they have maintained with their other first-party titles, we expect to see more gameplay, story, and score deep dive as we get closer to launch.
