At a time when the marketing budget for AAA games runs into hundreds of millions, Road to Vostok sold over 140,000 copies in its launch week with zero marketing budget. This is remarkable, coming from a solo dev game.

Road to Vostok two-day stats

Road to Vostok is a solo effort from Finnish developer and former army lieutenant Antti Leinonen. On Sunday, April 12, 2026, Leinonen shared the five-day stat following the launch of Road to Vostok into Early Access.

Right after the stats, the developer revealed that the game had zero marketing budget and judged the launch as “extremely successful”. Leinonen also revealed that the revenue from the Early Access launch has “secured the entire development roadmap”.

“Thank you for all who have purchased the game and trusted me as a developer. I will do very best to make sure that these resources from the launch are being utilized in a responsible and smart way to take this project to its next phase.”

The challenge facing Road to Vostok developer

While Leinonen noted that there are perks to working as a solo developer, he also highlighted the challenges he is facing, especially keeping up with feedback.

“One of these limitations is your capacity to handle upcoming information,” he said. “For example, I currently have ~11k unread emails and most of my communication channels are pretty much ‘running away from me’.”

“In practice, this means that when I answer one contact form email, by the time I have replied to that, there’s 4 more and while your a sleep and you wake up, you’re +500 messages behind and so on.”

If you are witnessing any bugs while playing Road to Vostok, it may take a week for the developer to start working on a hotfix, as he is currently recovering from the long hours put into getting the game to the current state.
