CD Projekt Red surprised fans of The Witcher 3 last week with the announcement of an upcoming expansion called Songs of the Past. This is the third expansion for the game, which was released over a decade ago.

“Medallion’s humming… that can only mean one thing! It’s time to announce The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past!” the developer wrote via a post on X. “This brand new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will take you to the Path with Geralt of Rivia once more. It’s being co-developed with @Fools_Theory and is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2027. Stay tuned for more information in late summer. ⏰”

With the upcoming expansion, CD Projekt Red has also informed fans that they will be updating the system requirements for running The Witcher 3 on PC, to ensure “smooth performance and compatibility”. Starting from the next update, the minimum requirements will be as follows:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600, Intel Core i5-8400
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660, AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB
- VRAM: 6 GB
- RAM: 12 GB
- Storage: 70 GB SSD
- OS: 64-bit Windows 11
CD Projekt Red did not just reveal new minimum spec requirements but also explained why they did so. For example, they said they will no longer test games on Windows 10 following Microsoft’s end of support for the OS on October 14, 2025. Also, they said that HDDs will no longer be supported because SSDs offer faster load times and smoother asset streaming.
The Witcher 3 expansion could be the last time Geralt will be the protagonist for a long time, as The Witcher 4 moves to Ciri as the new protagonist. It is speculated that the latest expansion will bridge the gap between The Witcher 3 and 4 and explain the reason for the transition to a new protagonist.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold 65 million copies

Releasing a new content expansion for a title that is over a decade old makes a lot of sense when you look at the total base installs. According to CD Projekt Red’s latest earnings presentation, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has now sold 65 million copies.

The series firmly sits on the list of the top 10 best-selling games of all time. In last year’s earnings presentation, the game had sold 60 million. That means it has moved 5 million more copies in the last year. With the announcement of the new expansion coming in 2027, that number is expected to bump up further.
A Statement from the CFO confirmed that the studio had a solid revenue stream in the first 3 months of the year. Most of the revenue came from Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3.
The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past will be showcased at Gamescom 2026

CD Projekt Red announced last week that the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3 will be showcased at Gamescom 2026. The developer made the announcement through their social media platforms.
“Wind’s howling… And it’s taking us to Gamescom in Cologne!” the developer wrote. “Come join us in the entertainment area, where we will be showing Songs of the Past! See you on the Path. ⚔️”
The studio’s social media manager, Marcin Łukaszewski, has stressed that Songs of the Past should not be called a DLC, but rather an expansion. According to Łukaszewski, CDPR views DLC as a minor content addition, such as extra outfits. In contrast, expansions for them mean “major pieces of content providing lots of hours of gameplay, including new story, characters, etc.”
