Ubisoft launched Champions Tactics, a Web3 competitive turn-based RPG, in October 2024. The turn-based game allows players to assemble groups of three characters to fight against enemies. However, its Web3 element was the main source of controversy that earned it mixed reviews.

“Today, we’re sharing an important update regarding the future of Champions Tactics,” it told players on its Discord server on August 1, 2026. “After careful consideration, we have made the decision to sunset the game. The Champions Tactics servers will officially shut down on October 30.”

“Until then, the game will remain fully playable, and our goal is to ensure that players can continue to enjoy the experience during these final months. As part of this transition, in-app purchases will be disabled on all platforms. We want to sincerely thank you for your support, passion, and dedication to Champions Tactics. More details and reminders will be shared as we approach the shutdown date.”
In the turn-based RPG, every character functions as an NFT and could be purchased with in-game currency or cryptocurrency. Back in May, Ubisoft told players it planned to transition away from the game’s blockchain functionality progressively.

“We want to share an important update regarding Champions Tactics,” the developer said at that time on the game’s official website.
“Following upcoming changes to the blockchain infrastructure supporting the game’s Web3 features, Champions Tactics will progressively transition away from blockchain functionality. Our priority is to ensure you can continue enjoying the game while providing enough time and clarity to manage your assets.”
Champions Tactics launched with 75,000 Champions in total. They were free to mint during the Champions mint in July 2024. However, NFTs remain contentious for several issues, including a high carbon footprint and “cynical implementation”. Over the years, the value and use of NFTs have dipped significantly.
