Unity announced on July 30, 2026, that it was bringing dedicated Engine support to Netflix Games. The goal is to make it easier for developers to ship games on the streaming platform. The announcement marks a deepening of a long-running relationship between the two companies.
“Unity is bringing dedicated Engine support to Netflix Games, making it easier for developers to build and deliver games across Netflix’s multi-platform ecosystem on mobile and TV,” Unity wrote in a message shared on LinkedIn.
“Dedicated support includes optimizations for Netflix’s cloud gaming offering, helping studios build once and ship across platforms while giving members a faster path from browse to play.”
Unity Engine has previously been used to develop Netflix Games such as Black Mirror: Thronglets, Squid Game: Unleashed, and Unhinged. In fact, Night School Studio, a Netflix-owned studio, has used the engine for their latest games.
Why Netflix Games developers will be excited—and frightened—about Unity’s dedicated engine
A dedicated Unity Engine is a technical leap that will change how cloud and multi-platform games are deployed. Before the partnership, Netflix Games developers had to manually integrate proprietary services, as well as build separate codebases for TV and mobile. This often led to a bloated team, making it harder for indie developers to play in the field. Unity’s dedicated engine removes that barrier.
In the past, studios needed to maintain isolated builds for Android, iOS, and TVs. With Unity’s Engine, developers targeting Netflix Games can now build once and ship everywhere. The reason is that the engine outputs a unified product that is optimized for the entire Netflix ecosystem.
Unity has made architectural tweaks to the engine specifically to improve cloud streaming, which is an important strategic push of Netflix Games. The engine tweak reduces latency and slashes the time it takes a subscriber from scrolling to playing a game. Since the engine is designed primarily around Netflix’s platform requirements, features like game save states, user profiles, and cloud streaming protocols work out of the box.
For studios, that means they need fewer engineers to maintain Android, iOS, and Cloud streaming code bases. Each of the platforms previously required separate teams to maintain. Bringing existing console or PC games to Netflix will become a straightforward export process, instead of an entire rewrite that took months.

Unfortunately, since Unity’s Engine streamlines multiplatform deployment of Netflix Games, fewer developers will be required. That ultimately leads to fewer job opportunities. Some studios may find themselves in a situation where they can lay off employees without losing momentum. In other words, more Netflix Games devs will likely wear the green banner badge on LinkedIn in the coming months.
How the Unity Engine positions Netflix to compete in the industry
For many years now, Netflix has been investing billions of dollars to grow its gaming division. Netflix Games catalog has grown significantly in the last five years. However, it has yet to turn the desired profit. The partnership with Unity makes Netflix a genuine threat to traditional console ecosystems and puts it on the same path as tech giants like PlayStation, Xbox, and Apple.

Unity has now listed Netflix as a primary target platform, alongside Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Hopefully, this will be the big break that Netflix needs to change public perception about Netflix Games being a “mobile gaming add-on” to a mainstream gaming platform. Other benefits that will come to Netflix through this partnership include:
- Streaming games on its app via cloud infrastructure optimized by Unity will allow Netflix to bypass store fees and platform restrictions imposed by legacy stores
- Netflix Games was previously restricted to mobile downloads. However, with the dedicated engine, Netflix Games can push console-quality graphics to Smart TV apps
- Due to streamlined development, Netflix can easily fund high-quality indie exclusives based on its massively popular IPs that will only be available to subscribers. In other words, it gives it better control over its IP
Several major upcoming and new flagship titles have been announced for the dedicated Unity Engine pipeline, including Squid Game: Unleashed, Black Mirror: Thronglets, Unhinged, WWE 2K25: Netflix Edition, and Underwatermelon: Fruit Merge. Netflix currently has around 80 games in active development, and it is expected that these games will be built on the new Unity pipeline.
