When Bungie announced last month that Destiny 2 will get its last update on June 9, 2026, the plan for fans of the franchise was simple: show up and slam the servers to make a statement. Well, fans heeded the call and made their statement.

The plan of the server slam was for enough fans of the game to turn up on the day of the last update and overload the servers till it crashes. The goal, on the other hand, is to let Bungie know that they are making a mistake by ending support for the game and forcing PlayStation to greenlight Destiny 3.

At the launch of Destiny 2: Monument of Triumph on June 9, fans turned up as requested in several public pleas and made a statement. Firstly, they smashed Marathon’s peak player count, the game that Bungie is abandoning Destiny 2 for.
Destiny 2 fans’ strong statement
At some point, the droves of players trying to log in were too much for the servers to handle, so some players were met with error messages. Even SteamDB struggled to keep up. According to a report by Charlie Champion on Insider Gaming, the Steam player tracking website went down at some point.

However, at the time of writing this report, SteamDB was up and running and shows that Destiny 2 received 167,867 concurrent players in the last 24 hours, with the current concurrent players standing at 124,005.
While these numbers were significant enough to push Destiny 2 up to the 7th most played game on Steam, it was still far from the game’s all-time concurrent player numbers of 316,750.

Well, if there is a take-home message from this, it is that players still prefer Destiny 2 to Marathon. At the time of writing, Marathon had 15,654 active players with an all-time peak of 88,337.
An important point to note, though, is that Marathon has the bulk of its player base on Steam while Destiny 2 has a higher console player base. The final decision on the fate of Destiny 2 and Bungie lies with their parent company, Sony Interactive Entertainment.
A petition for Sony to greenlight Destiny 3 has surpassed 375,000 signatures. While fans kept to the plan, it may take a while to see if their actions hit the right nerves to earn the goal they desired, or if they will be forced to move on to Marathon with Bungie—or find solace elsewhere.
