Revolution Software Shines At Game Republic 20th Anniversary Awards

The Game Republic celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. The event also honored the talents and achievements of the UK games industry across the north of England. Some brands that have stood solidly behind Game Republic are Red Kite Games, Barclays, and Escape Technology. Revolution Software won in two important categories, making the studio the show’s star.

“There is so much talent and innovation happening with games produced in the region being exported around the globe,” said the founder and managing director of Game Republic Jamie Sefton during the announcement of the award plans earlier this year. “Yorkshire and the North is producing world-leading games and technology, and we will be celebrating that throughout the year.”

Revolution Software’s Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars was announced as the Best Game Ever Made in Yorkshire and The North. The co-founders of the studio Charles Cecil and Noirin Carmody were also honored with the Games Legend award.

Double Eleven, the studio that has worked on popular titles including Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 76, Rust Console Edition, Crackdown 3, and LittleBigPlanet for PlayStation Vita also won two awards. The studio was awarded the Best Large Studio. Also, Kimberley Turner, the studio’s boss, was awarded Best Company Boss.

“It is wonderful to see such a breadth and depth of games studios in Yorkshire and the North of England, showing what a well-developed ecosystem there is,” said Chris Taylor of Eaton Smith Solicitors, one of the sponsors of Game Republic.

Other standout awardees include Huey Games recognized as the Best Small Studio. Radical Forge was also recognized as the Best Mid-Sized Studio. The Game Republic 20th Anniversary Awards held on November 23rd at GameDevDay at Tileyard North in Wakefield. Over 400 people attended the event.

“What was clear in the mid-sized studio category was that companies nominated all shared a common feature of growing but staying true to their roots,” said Elaine Dowman from Barclays in reaction to the mid-sized studio category award.

Nominations for the Game Republic 20th Anniversary Awards closed on September 30. Although the nomination was open to the public, Game Republic, Sponsors, and Rhianna Pratchett, the company’s Boss Judge, made the final decision about the winners. Below is the full list of the award winners.

  • Studio Hero: Anne Van Der Merwe, Red Kite Games
  • Most Inspiring Course Leader: Matt Novak, University of Huddersfield
  • Community Player Award: Andrew Crawshaw, Thunkd

The best studios, best bosses, and best game ever made in Yorkshire and The North were announced in front of 400 audience. Special guests of the show included Xbox, Sumo, Team17, D3t, and publishers Kepler Interactive and Secret Mode.

“I feel extremely honored to be involved with this award—and what’s better than one games legend if not two!” said Simon Iwaniszak, studio director of Red Kite Games in reaction to the Games Legends award winners. “Over the last three decades, Charles Cecil and Noirin Carmody have been instrumental in ensuring that the games industry in Yorkshire and The North prospers and evolves.”
