NetherRealm Studios is not done with promoting the newest entry in their franchise, Mortal Kombat 1. This time, the studio spikes the excitement with a live-action trailer titled “It’s In Our Blood”. The trailer featured ex-pro wrestler and action figure Dave Bautista.
Walking through a library aisle and pushing a cart, Bautista sets off cataclysmic events including a sudden wind rush and shattering of glasses and ceramic wares by simply saying the words “Mortal Kombat”. We see his eyes turn into a ball of lava afterward.
“There’s a force hidden in all of us,” the trailer narrator said. “Only a select few, the fearless, will discover it. Unleash it and ignite a new realm of possibilities.”
We see more people saying the words “Mortal Kombat”, releasing a shockwave that appears to enchant everyone within its range. Everyone infected by the shockwave troops to the street and joins a growing horde in the “Mortal Kombat” chant.

“The fight is calling,” Bautista said. “Who will you bring? Who will you trust? No longer are we beholden to the past. A new era is upon us. This is our time! This is… Mortal Kombat!”
The trailer ends with scenes from the game showing some of the fan-favorite characters unleashing devastating moves on their opponents. Mortal Kombat 1 will launch on 19 September 2023. However, those that purchase Mortal Kombat 1 Premium Edition or the Kollector’s Edition will have early access from 14 September 2023.
It will be interesting to see how the Kameo Karacters will change the gameplay dynamics. All those that have become veterans in the franchise will likely go through a learning curve. Perhaps, this will birth a new generation of leaders at the next EVO and other esports events.
The Mortal Kombat 1 live-action trailer was inspired by the 1993 commercial
The new Mortal Kombat 1 live-action trailer was inspired by the 1993 TV commercial, Mortal Monday, released to promote the launch of Mortal Kombat 1. In that trailer, a man stood in the middle of the street with arms lifted skyward and screamed “Mortal Kombat”.
What followed was people pouring into the street and joining the chant. The trailer was interspaced with scenes from the game on different consoles including Genesis, Super NES, Game Gear, and Game Boy. Interestingly, that edition also launched on September (13th precisely).
Ed Boon, the CCO at NetherRealm Studios and Mortal Kombat co-creator acknowledged the influence the original Mortal Monday commercial had on the new live-action trailer in a press release.
“The original Mortal Monday commercial earmarked the beginning of our journey into making games for home gaming systems,” Boon said. “It’s amazing to pay homage to such a memorable moment in Mortal Kombat history as we get ready to launch our newest game, Mortal Kombat 1.”

Bautista also weighed in on the original Mortal Monday commercial and noted that the iconic scream from the commercial was one of the reasons he fell in love with the franchise.
“I vividly remember the original Mortal Monday commercial, especially the iconic scream,” Bautista said. “That’s what started my journey as a fan of Mortal Kombat, which continues to this day, 30 years later. I’m thrilled and honored to be a part of the game’s legacy.”
