Nintendo’s latest financial report shows that the Switch 2 has continued an impressive sales run when compared to its predecessor. Nintendo has shipped 23.68 million units of the Switch 2 since its launch in June 2025.
Nintendo’s August 6 Financial Earnings Report shares insights on both hardware and software sales, including details on Switch 2 performance in the first quarter of the company’s FY27.

In comparison to the original Switch, which has sold 156.59 million units worldwide since launch, the Switch 2 has so far continued to outperform the sales numbers of its predecessor at a comparable stage of its lifecycle.
In Q1 FY27 alone, the Switch 2 sold 3.82 million units. While this represents a 34.4% year-on-year decline, it is not entirely a bad thing considering the fact that console sales are usually highest in the launch quarter, which coincidentally falls in Nintendo’s Q1 FY26. In the period under review, the original Switch sold 0.66 million units, representing a 31.8% year-on-year decline.
Nintendo explains the success of the Switch 2 so far
According to Nintendo, many consumers have continued to adopt Switch 2, “encouraged by the release of new titles and other factors”. The other factor that Nintendo did not mention is likely related to the increase in console prices.

Sony and Microsoft have both bumped up the prices of PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (multiple times in some cases), owing to persistent “changes in market conditions” primarily linked to memory shortages. Nintendo has maintained the launch price of the Switch 2. However, a new price regime will take effect on September 1, 2026, which will see the price of the console rise by $50 in the United States and Canada and €30 in Europe. This will likely lead to a new sales rush from players who want to avoid paying extra.
In terms of software, Nintendo Switch 2 software sales rose by 9.2% year-on-year to 9.46 million. Interestingly, software sales on the original Switch increased by 38.6% year-on-year to 33.81 million units. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream sold 7.94 million units, and Pokémon Pokopia sold 1.27 million units, making them the best-selling games in the quarter.
At 156.59 million units, the original Nintendo Switch has now surpassed the sales record of Nintendo DS (154.02 million units) to become the company’s most successful console. It is now second to PlayStation 2 (160 million units) on the all-time highest-selling console list.
