A Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, San Francisco Division, has preliminarily approved a proposed settlement of $7,850,000 for a class action lawsuit against Sony in relation to the PlayStation Store policy from April 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023.

Sony and PlayStation Proposed settlement

The lawsuit captioned Caccuri, et al. v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, Civil Action No. 21-cv-03361-AMO (N.D. Cal.) (the “Action”) was filed in 2023 and accused Sony of monopolizing the market by restricting third-party games on its platform.

According to a press release on the preliminary settlement, Sony “violated federal antitrust law and certain state laws” through unlawful elimination of competition. It was said that the behavior caused “consumers to pay more for certain digital games than they otherwise would have paid on the PlayStation Store”.

Although Sony denied “that it engaged in any wrongdoing” or that any of the class lawsuit members were harmed by its action, the company has proposed a settlement of over $7.8 million. The Court has scheduled a hearing on October 15, 2026, to decide on whether to approve the settlement.

Sony PlayStation Store

Every player who purchased specific titles through the PlayStation Store from April 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023, is included in the lawsuit. However, if you want to exclude yourself, you can do so by submitting a written request by July 2, 2026. Doing that also means that you will not participate in the distribution of the settlement, if approved by the court.

You may be eligible for the reimbursement if you purchased any of the following titles from the PlayStation Store within the disputed period:

  • WWE 2K17 to 2K19
  • NBA 2K18 and 2K19
  • Demon’s Souls
  • Need for Speed Rivals
  • inFamous Second Son
  • Until Dawn
  • Uncharted 3
  • God of War III Remastered
