Earlier today, Wizards of the Coast confirmed via a LinkedIn post that The Magic: The Gathering Arena team within the studio “has voted to be represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA), and we respect and support them in that decision”.
“We now look ahead to working with the CWA in good faith and transparency as we enter the bargaining process. At Wizards, our commitment to building a culture where our people feel respected and valued and can continue to make incredible games and experiences for our players is unwavering.”

Many developers have commended the team for their bravery to unionize, especially at this time of uncertainty, marked by studio closures and mass layoffs. Since 2023, there has been a growing call for developers to unionize to better protect their interests. In 2024, there was a flurry of unionization announcements across different studios, including:
- CD Projekt Red developers joined forces with other Polish video game developers to unionize
- Over 100 Avalanche Studios devs unionized and renegotiated their contract
- Raven Software staff also unionized
- Over 500 World of Warcraft developers unionized
However, it has been alleged that Wizards of the Coast did a lot to stop the unionization. The revelation came as a comment under the post from the studio announcing the formation of the union.
“WoTC chose not to voluntarily recognize the union,” wrote Jonathan Campbell. “They hired a union avoidance law firm, hosted anti-union training sessions, and deadnamed their employees during the election process. They did everything they could to stop it and are just admitting defeat in this post.”
At the time of writing, GameBaba Universe could not ascertain the authenticity of this claim. Regardless, we salute the bravery of the team, knowing fully well that most studios are hostile to unionization.
