After eight years and struggling to find a sustainable audience, World War 3 has finally shut its servers, bringing the long-running battle to an unceremonious end. The team at New Generation Games and Whishlist Games said their final goodbyes in yesterday’s announcement.

“Operators, we have an important update to share regarding World War 3,” the team wrote on Steam. “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end support for the game and shut down its servers.”

“The World War 3 servers will be taken offline on 3 August 2026. After this date, the game will no longer be playable. This was not an easy decision. You have supported us throughout the years and we want to thank everyone who played World War 3, shared feedback, reported issues, created content and kept the community alive. Thank you for being part of this journey. The World War 3 Team.”
World War 3 was launched into Early Access in 2018. On December 10, 2022, it emerged as a full game. The free-to-play tactical multiplayer shooter attracted over 12,000 concurrent players after the full launch. It also had a faithful community. However, on June 3, 2026, the team announced that the game would be going offline. That dreaded day finally came two months later.

World War 3 was described as a “free-to-play tactical online multiplayer FPS where the world is your battleground. Outgun the enemy in thrilling, team-based skirmishes with a huge arsenal of weapons, vehicles, gadgets, and drones at your disposal.”
Throughout its lifespan, the game garnered 23,202 user reviews on Steam, and 53% of them were mixed. While the shuttering of any game is always sad, it is harder when the game is online-only because there is no backup for players to continue playing afterward.
Reactions following World War 3 server shutdown

The mixed sentiments that have trailed the game since launch continued in the comment section of the announcement of its shutdown. One user wrote, “How sad, this game had some good potential”.
Another comment read, “So you weren’t cooking after all no updates nothing big you just abandoned it. what a shame. waste of money buying it. Pathetic I’m sorry to say but this is just pathetic.”
The decision to shut down World War 3 has added momentum to the Stop Killing Games campaign. Many of the comments included a link to the campaign that is intended to pressure developers and publishers from suddenly shuttering games that gamers paid for without any alternative.
Regardless of sentiment, running World War 3 servers was simply unsustainable at its recent player count. In the hours before the game was ultimately shuttered, it struggled to pull in double-digit concurrent players. For the past two years, the most concurrent players the game has garnered is just over 300.
