Capcom released the latest installment in the Resident Evil franchise, titled Resident Evil Requiem, on February 27, 2026. A message from Resident Evil series Executive Producer Jun Takeuchi shows that the game has now sold over 6 million copies.

The first Resident Evil game was released on March 22, 1996. Capcom built on the success of that release with several other installments in the series, and spin-offs. Resident Evil Requiem is the 9th main installment in the series and sees the return of Leon playing alongside a new character, Grace Ashcroft, another survivor of the Raccoon City incident.

“To our beloved fans of the Resident Evil series,” began the message shared by Takeuchi to mark the milestone anniversary of the franchise. “Today marks the 30th anniversary of Resident Evil.”
“We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the fans who have supported us along the way sine the release of our first game on March 22nd, 1996.
Last month, we released Resident Evil Requiem. With the return to Raccoon City, the place where it all began, we combined the two hearts of the series—horror and action—and packed them both into the title. And now, Requiem has reached over six million players around the world.”
Takeuchi said the team is working even harder to bring “more wonderful experiences in the future” to fans of the franchise. The executive producer thanked all fans of the franchise and asked for their continued support as the franchise begins another decade.

Resident Evil Requiem was widely praised by fans of the franchise for its great storytelling and return to the roots of the franchise. In fact, it became the highest-rated entrant in the series on Metacritic since Resident Evil 4. Some have already tipped it for the Game of the Year award.
