The announcement that Ubisoft is ending game development at Red Storm Entertainment came as a shock, even to those impacted. The studio is famous for developing the Tom Clancy game franchise. The announcement technically meant the closure of the studio as a game developer.

Red Storm Entertainment

Red Storm is based in North Carolina’s Research Triangle. Founded in 1996, it grew into a major game developer and has contributed to several successful franchises, including Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry. It was acquired by Ubisoft in 2000.

According to the internal announcement from Ubisoft on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Red Storm will continue to operate in the form of global IT and Snowdrop support.

The decision by Ubisoft to end game development at Red Storm is part of a company-wide cost-saving plan. So far, the decision has led to the cancellation of six games and the postponement of seven others, and the closure of two studios.

Ubisoft has proposed cutting up to 200 jobs (around 18% of the workforce) at its Paris headquarters. Layoffs have also been confirmed at its studio in Toronto and others. The goal is to lower its fixed cost by an additional €200 million in the next two years.

Outpouring of emotions from game devs over Red Storm closure

Since the announcement from Ubisoft, several game developers who have previously worked at Red Storm Entertainment have publicly shared their experiences. The majority revealed the studio took a chance on them when they were just getting into the industry.

“My first real game development home, Red Storm Entertainment, is being shuttered for game development,” wrote Funcom lead UI/UX designer Doug Oglesby.

“Red Storm is unique in my experience for having always seen the studio not as a collection of IPs and capabilities, but as a group of people, all dedicated to making games and making a life.”

A similar opinion was shared by game writing expert Richard Dansky in a post that read, “Words cannot express my shock and dismay at the closure of Red Storm Entertainment. It was the studio that took a chance on me, the place I learned my craft and worked on amazing games, the place where I made so many lifelong friends and worked with so many talented people. It was, in so many ways, home.”

Studio audio and narrative director Justin Dust also wrote, “RSE took a chance on me way back in 2004 and gave me my first job in the industry. It will always hold a special place in my heart and I’m truly saddened by the loss of this incredible studio with such a storied legacy and so much talent to offer.

“It’s also personally sad as this was the studio that gave me my first job in the industry,” wrote Fortnite Battle Royale director Christopher Pope. “It’s the team that taught me how to make games, how to be curious, and how to push the envelope.”

Game designer Christian Allen wrote, “Red Storm is literally the reason I am in the games industry, and I am eternally grateful to the folks that founded and worked at the studio and gave me my first professional opportunity and built the games that so shaped my career.”

Our hearts at GameBaba Universe go out to everyone who has been affected by this development, and we hope they land on their feet soon.
